Necessary for the Musician, Great Fun for the Fan
The egg shaker is a remarkably unheralded instrument. Used by singers and percussionists for years in recordings and on stage, this modest little instrument provides "that" percussive shaking sound we have all heard.
Created by joining two plastic moulded egg shaped pieces, quarter filled with beads or seeds, the egg is held in the hand and shaken around to produce a grainy textured percussive "swish". If you want to get clever with it, try holding the shaker in the palms of your hands tightly, opening slightly whilst shaking it up and down. This can make a whirling sound not possible with many other percussion instruments.
