What is drone photography?

Drone photography is the art of using a remote-controlled aircraft fitted with a camera to capture aerial stills and images. When you recall all the aerial pictures of green valleys and rivers and majestic buildings, you know that just a straight-on picture of the same object just won't do any more. Drone photography obviates the need for photographers to put themselves in precarious places and positions to get the perfect shot since a drone can be controlled by a remote. A drone’s ability to hover close to the ground, more than a helicopter ever could, has revolutionised photography.

Drone cameras have some practical advantages and features. Evolving drone technology makes them integral to a whole range of professions.

Aerial Photography using drones is frequently used for a diverse set of commercial, industrial, agricultural, governmental and private clients.

They are excellent tools for surveying hazardous areas or identifying maintenance needs.

Drones are a worthy investment for small businesses. Wedding and event photographers, sports videographers, wildlife and nature photographers, as well as those involved in natural terrain surveying and mapping for various purposes, filmmakers, journalists, leisure travellers, backpackers, and real estate agents can effectively utilise a drone.

Is drone photography a very recent technological development?

Before the creation of drones, aerial photography was significantly difficult. Artists and scientists used tall buildings, ladders, balloons, kites, planes and even pigeons to defy gravity.

Aerial photographers use gyro stabilisers to counteract the movement of the aircraft. The resulting images from the digital cameras are outstanding quality, high-resolution aerial views that can be delivered right to the client's desktop on the day of shooting. Finally, the invention of the drone camera - a robotic aircraft carrying a camera is the pinnacle of aerial photography, as we know it today.

How is the drone camera controlled?

With a variety of models, most drones share many of the same controls and functionality. A drone or a drone camera, typically refers to a quadcopter configuration. Quadcopter drone cameras maintain stability, direction and motion using four rotors; two rotate clockwise and the other two counter-clockwise. A mounted camera sits at the centre to take photos and record videos.

Standard remote-control configurations are built with two joysticks that allow you to control your drone’s orientation and movements. Using the left joystick, you can control elevation and orientation.

Just move the joystick forward to ascend, backward to descend and left or right to rotate. With the right joystick, you can accelerate forward, backward, and side-to-side.

Beyond these standard direction controls, you should also find other controls for your camera so you can take photos, record video and so forth. Check the manual for your device beforehand so you know its capabilities.

What are the main considerations for investing in a drone?

If you have decided to invest in a drone camera route, consider the following main points: Features and how they match your purpose

Drone cameras come in a range of models, each with more features than the other. Knowing what you need the drone camera for will help you pick the right model for your needs. Some common features include flight time and distance, camera capabilities and the ability to manoeuvre in tight spaces or heavy winds.

Cost

While the market is loaded with expensive options that offer many features, not everyone can afford them. There are a lot of less expensive models available that still have great functionality but lack some of the bells and whistles that adorn the expensive models.

Battery life

Most drones run on batteries, which means that you’ll need to charge it regularly - usually after every 30 minutes! It also means if your battery dies mid-flight, your whole experience will be lost.
