The main difference between a normal trash bin and a composting bin is that a composting bin has many holes/perforations/openings all over it. These holes/perforations/openings serve 2 crucial purposes in the composting process:
They act as vents for the entry of oxygen into the composting mixture. This is a vital requirement for the composting micro-organisms to break down the organic material without creating any malodour. The second purpose is that these holes act as a channel for transpiration. When decomposition of organic matter takes place, water vapour is a by-product of the chemical reaction and the water vapour needs to be drained. If the composting is done in a trash can, the water will not have an optimum transpiration rate. This affects the wet-dry ratio of the composting mixture, resulting in oxygen being unable to interact effectively with the composting mixture, resulting, once again in the generation of malodour.
There are four basic ingredients in the compost pile: nitrogen, carbon, water and air.
Composting in its simplest form at home or in the garden can be done in these simple steps:
Garden composting wherein the volume of compostable items is huge can be done in a mesh-type composting bin. The bigger openings in the mesh allow for the higher level of air circulation required for the huge volume to compost at a faster rate.
