  • Wiggle are the British duo of Terry Francis and Nathan Coles, both DJs with a well-developed taste for acid house, soul, and rare groove. Their contribution to the Fabric series is a celebration of modern tech-house, a continuously mixed collection of fairly obscure material by fairly obscure artists, all of it typified by crispy, minimal beats and a good-humored attitude. With this kind of music, subtle differences are key, and Francis and Coles highlight those differences by means of artful juxtaposition: Hipp-E’s hard and rigid “Darkness Brovas” is followed quickly by Corrie’s more open and swinging “Some Bizarre”; the creepy vocal samples of “No Need to See” by Cle are offset by C-Soul’s party-ready “Everybody [Nathan Coles Remix]”; the pretty and dubwise “Change” by Terry & Ricardo comes hard on the heels of Laid’s rather goofy “Punch Up [Wozsonik Vokz Mix].” Presence uses an offbeat hi-hat cymbal and science-fiction synthesizers to fun effect on “Gettin’ Lifted,” but Peace Division’s “Club Therapy” relies too much on vocal blah-blah-blah and too little on interesting rhythms. Overall, this is a worthy entry in the Fabric series, but one that will appeal most strongly only to a particular subset of listeners. ~ Rick Anderson
