Australian TV is changing

Posted on .

The Australian free to air TV industry is in the middle of a huge overhaul.

Everyone with a digital TV or digital tuner is about to start getting a lot more content on free to air channels.

All the major networks are pushing new channels as soon as this month.

  • Channel 7 are launching 7Mate, a channel aimed at men aged 16-49
  • Channel 9 are launching GEM, aimed at women aged 35 and up
  • Channel 10 are launching Eleven aimed at the youth market

7Mate and GEM will be live in late September, with Eleven hitting the airwaves in 2011.

All of these are offering new styles of channels for existing networks, and in some cases will replaced current SD or HD broadcast offerings from the 3 commercial networks.

And with Google TV possibly just around the corner, the functionality of the TV in your home is beginning to increase dramatically.

What are you looking forward to seeing on the new channels? Is there something you think is missing?
